Natural Supplements That May Control Your Blood Sugar

You may have been wondering if there is anything else you can do to improve your blood sugar control.  If you are not on any medication for diabetes but would like a little extra help, there are some supplements you may want to consider.

Some are good for heart health and other health benefits, so you may want to include them as a part of your health regimen.  Before starting any new supplements, you should talk to your doctor.  Your doctor will know if you can take the supplement; most of them are actually good for you, so there shouldn’t be any issues.

Here are some supplements to consider if you are looking to regulate your blood sugar:

  • Polyphenols – Green tea and dark chocolate are good sources of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that help promote glucose control and also vascular health. You can also take polyphenols as a supplement.
  • Alpha-lipoic Acid (ALA) – Another antioxidant, ALA is found in spinach, potatoes, and broccoli, so eating these types of food offer a great benefit in lowering blood glucose levels. It also protects the body’s cells from damage from oxidation. ALA supplements are available and they have been found to be helpful in reducing symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, such as pain and burning sensations.
  • Ginseng – It is suggested to take American ginseng for lowering blood sugar. It works best if taken up to 2 hours before a meal, at about 3 grams per dose. There are different American ginseng supplements that may have different effects, so look for one that has a higher level of ginsenosides.
  • Garlic – This bulb is healthy for your heart and has been found to lower cholesterol levels. Garlic may also increase the amount of insulin in the blood stream to regulate blood sugar levels. It is available in supplement form. It is worth considering this as part of your diabetic program as it can be a protective agent against diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy.
  • Coenzyme Q10 Diabetes – CoQ10 supplements are a great part of a healthy heart regime as well as reducing A1c levels. People in a study took 100 mg of CoQ10 twice a day found improved blood sugar readings.
  • Vanadium – This trace mineral has been found to lower blood sugar by mimicking insulin. The other way it works is by improving the sensitivity of the body’s cells to insulin. This addresses the two ways that blood sugar regulation is done. Supplements for vanadyl sulfate have been found to substantially lower fasting glucose and A1c levels. It is advised that you consult a doctor before taking vanadium. The dosage is recommended at 150-200 mg a day. You may want to start at a lower dose and work your way up.

High glucose levels in your blood can wreak havoc on your body and cause a multitude of problems.  If you are having difficulty in getting your blood sugar readings at an acceptable level, perhaps the supplements mentioned will help you in reaching your health goals. However, diet and exercise cannot be replaced with supplements; it is much better if you still follow your diabetic meal plan and exercise and use dietary supplements as a tool to help you.
